This webinar will examine the core ethics and principles which solicitors must uphold, and how these apply across a range of scenarios.
Using the framework of the Codes of Conduct & SRA Principles, and with reference to case-study materials, the course will consider ethical issues that arise in daily practice, such as:
- taking on a piece of work
- potential conflicts of interest, whether client or own interest
- handling client monies
- confidentiality obligations
- conflicting Principles and which take precedence
The webinar will also allow opportunities for interaction and discussion.

Meet our speakers
Michelle Garlick, Partner, Weightmans
Named by one client as “The Rockstar of Compliance”, Michelle has advised and represented many hundreds of lawyers and legal businesses on their regulatory obligations through Weightmans’ award-winning Compli service. She is also Weightmans’ MLRO and is known for her pragmatic, commercial and supportive approach.
Michelle is the author of The COLP’s Toolkit, a Law Society best-seller, and coauthor of The Good Risk Law Firm, published by the Solicitors Journal. She is a well-known speaker and commentator on the legal circuit and sits on the editorial committee of the Law Society’s Legal Compliance Bulletin.
Michelle was extremely proud to be elected as the President of Manchester Law Society for 2019, having been a council member of Manchester Law Society for six years and chair of its regulatory affairs committee and COLP and COFA Forum. During her Presidency, she launched the Manchester Law Society Access to the Profession Hub to help improve Diversity and Inclusion in the legal sector and she appeared in the Manchester Power 100 list 2019 of most influential people in Manchester.
Calum MacLean, Risk Manager, Miller Insurance
Calum is a Risk Manager within Miller’s Professions team, working primarily with law firms, however his experience also spans across accountants and construction professionals.
He has worked in insurance for 16 years, primarily in risk management, with a particular emphasis on the solicitor market. Whilst his current focus is on UK based firms, he also brings a wealth of international experience.
Calum is a self-confessed ideas person and loves looking at how to make things work better. He enjoys bringing a pragmatic approach to clients and delivering innovative ways to continue the positive evolution of Miller’s offering.
